6 am Saint - The sky's the limit for this Punk band!!!
****
American style Punk reborn in London
6 am Saint **** are supporting legendary Punk guitarist Doyle (The Misfits), and they really did impress me in many ways. They are a band that I think if they put a little more time and effort into their music and live show, could be big in America. They have that American Punk sound, which sometimes moves into Stoner and Doom at times, but keeps to the style and sound of bands on Drive-Thru Records back in the 2000's. If you think The Ataris, Against Me!, Rx Bandits, Fenix*TX, The Starting line and Dashboard Confessional. I do think that they want to be described more in the same breathe as The Misfits or Black Flag, more than maybe some of the bands I have mentioned. But I think personally this would be a mistake for them to think this, and maybe they should be playing on different bills.
Because they have the sound that if eleborated and understood, could take them really far. Especially if they played in the coastal areas around the US, where there is a resurgence in the music by the bands which I compared them to above. I do like though that 6 am Saint have added a flair of Doyle's infamous sound into their guitar and bass sounds, and it is very cleaver because it makes them go down very well as a support band to The Misfits guitarist Doyle. Also the fact they tell everyone that they are big Misfits fans and the singer Nathan Jackson tells a story about how Doyle threw a guitar pic at him at a gig in 2017, and he was so enamored by the show (Especially Doyle). And he didnt realise it hit him until end of the show that he did this, when he found the plectrum right before him like some prize. Or like Jack Black did in the motion picture film 'The Pick of Destiny', I do wonder if he is using this pick tonight because the bands set does seem to have some magic to it.
Jason is great onstage, moving across the stage like a veteran in the game. His movements are similar to say The Ataris or the guitarist of Thursday, so I would think he is into these bands. But he is not the only one. The whole band is well put together, the band consists of Nathan 'Fire' Jackson (Lead Vocals / Guitar), Ross Shelly-Pillsworth (Bass) who also produces the records, and Matt Chivers (Drums). 6 am Saint bass player Ross really keeps a steady beat, while Matt goes mad at times in the more upbeat songs. I have to say I don't know 6 am Saint's material that well, but as they play their songs I feel this is not the case. And this is a good sign of well written songs. These songs come from a good place, and influences that any Punk, Post-Punk or Alternative Punk fan would be happy to go into.
The set goes by really quick, and you are left with a warm feeling about 6 am Saint. That if you knew they were opening a bill, you would turn up early. Some of the highlights in their set are 'We Out', 'Spino' and 'Holy Spirit', but I have to say these only stand out slightly... because the whole set could be a highlight. They really surprised me as an opening act, I have seen so many opening acts that I have not enjoyed and 6 am Saint are not one of these. They are a great Punk band, that I hope to hear more of in the future... I think the sky is the limit for them... if they want it enough.
