And also the Trees - Play a very special show in London

November 19th 2022
London, The Lexington, UK

****

A very intimate show!!!

And also the Trees **** are a brand of 1980's Post-Punk / Alternative Goth performed live at The Lexington, London to present their new album ‘The Bone Carver', while celebrating fourty two years of stunning music. The band was supported by A Dead forest Index a duo from Australia as soon as I entered the venue, I felt at home, with DJ music covering generations of Post-Punk, New Wave, New Romantic and Goth tracks. These tunes set the scene for the perfect alternative autumn Saturday night, one I have been waiting for a while.

After the first act, the room got much busier, with fans getting much closer to the stage and very little room to spare for me to move around with my camera. Guitarist Justine Jones was the first to get on stage, followed by Paul Hill (Drums), Grant Gordon (Bass), Colin Ozanne (Keyboard / Clarinet) and a slow entrance by Simon Huw - all very welcomed by a cheering crowd. The session saw a great mix of new and old material, starting with the latest single ‘In a Bed in Yugoslavia’, followed by ‘Beyond action and Reaction’, which both get the show going in the right way.

Overall, their performance was very theatrical and somehow mystic; what more to expect from an old school Goth band, with singer Simon Huw slowly walking up and down the stage, kneeling, pulling hair and hiding a the back. The third track was ‘You Guess’, one of my favourites. Somehow, this song reminded me of deserted lands across the night, their melodies painted sceneries / pictures in my mind, delivering such a great intimate experience.

Almost all their tracks played on that night gave me goosebumps and were well executed. I was particularly fond of drummer Paul Hill’s mastery, passion and cuteness, as he kept lip-syncing his beats while playing. I also found the clarinet, played by Colin Ozanne, a nice touch adding a new layer of depth, especially with ‘Shantell’, another of my favourites. Part of the second half of the show saw heavier tracks being played, such as ‘Virus Meadow’, ’Wallpaper Dying ’and ‘Missing’. Another new track 'The Seven Skies’, really impressed me and showed that their new material is equally as good as their older songs.

The live session ended with a sweet and little melancholic soul like sang ‘Rive Droite’, which was a real highlight. And at this point, the band left the stage to very long applause and an audience eager for more. So said, the band got back on stage to perform four more songs, starting with the 80's track 'Prince Rupert', a crowd pleaser judging by the sound of which it was welcomed.

The band switched back to the 2022 material with ‘The Bone Carver’, and a second encore... which really was quite something. All in all, And also the Trees delighted the London crowd with an eighteen tracks set, including two encores ending on the track ‘Slow pulse Boy’. The whole show was great value for money, so as a smiley and proud Simon took a quick bowing to the crowd you realised you had just watched something quite special.
