Anne Marie Almedal - Memory Lane
****
If Nick Drake was a girl this is what it would sound like!
I normally give all the female singer songwriters to Jon Cooper to review but this one grabbed me in, so I just had to do it. She has a really unique beautiful voice and you can hear this from start to finish with the first track 'Back to where it Started' being a beautiful soft Folk track. You really think Anne Marie Almedal has felt in her life every words she sings, the tracks really feel like they come from the heart which is unusual these days and when it get's near the end of this track she up lifts it with a few la, la, la's before she brings it back down to the original melody.
She hails from Kristiansand in Norway which really surprises me because she has a real traditional English sound to her music like on 'One Day' which you could have seen her getting influences from artists like Nick Drake or John Martyn on. The funny thing is that I thought this and then I looked on her list of who she liked andNick Drake was number one and on this album. I do think she really pays a great tribute to the sadly passed artist. 'May you Never' sounds like it could be a single and has a really nice feel to it and it mixes Folk and Country together really nicely being led by piano and an acoustic guitar, this song really brings out her voice in a different way and could even a little influence from Dolly Parton to it.
This is easy listening with every song telling a story depicted really well on the track 'Scars' which floats by really nicely. Title track 'Memory Lane' is one of the best on the album and really sounds like Nick Drake this is my favourite and it is a little more up beat showing a great new side to her with some of the other tracks being a little too soft in places. This has strings in it and is so nice to listen to if you are a fan of Nick Drake you must get hold of this album because you will love it.
