Barren Womb - The suns not Yellow, it's chicken!

(CD Album Review)

***1/2
Creative Hardcore from Norway!

The suns not yellow, it's chicken is a crazy, charming little album. playing music grounded in Hardcore and Punk but not limiting themselves to the genre. The opening track 'Kill Hicks' is great it's fast and urgent and has this great piano riff running through the chorus. It's like a soundtrack to a car chase! Next track 'Will you be God's art or Satan's graffiti?' has a mid paced groove.

'Live fast, Die' is awesome and full of energy and one of the stand out tracks on this release. The album goes in all sorts of territories especially towards the end where things just get plane weird. 'Zombies never go out of Style' for instance. There are couple of experimental instrumentals before finishing the album on a bit more familiar territory. The sound of the album brings to mind Refused, The Bronx or The Icarus Line. I remember in the early 2000's when Hardcore really became popular and it branched off into Emo and to what would be known as Metalcore.

There would be bands like Blood Brothers, Dillinger escape Plan and Drowningman and they would play loud, fast Punk and mix Indie elements have a screaming singer and most of all long, sarcastic, Morrissey rip off titles for their songs. Well Barren Womb remind me of that time and I love them for it to be honest! It was a creative time and it was just before downloading and the internet f**ked everything up. Not world changing nor is it trying to be it's just a clever, fun little album that's worth your time if you miss International noise Conspiracy and the like.
