Which band are you actually seeing live?

Graspop Festival

Cavalera Conspiracy *** (Main Stage 1) Max comes to the stage and announces "Oh Yeah!, We're Back!!!" well is that Cavalera Conspiracy is back or is Sepultura back. This performance is a real Sepultura hits one, this annoys me a little because I really love the Cavalera Conspiracy albums and less than half the set is dedicated to material off these records. Some times you just want, what it says on the tin... and this set is billed as a Cavalera Conspiracy set. We get a massive seven Sepultura songs if you count a song that is a montage of three songs, well it does go on for quite a while and a Nailbomb track and even a Motorhead cover.

Don't get me wrong I love Nailbomb and I love Motorhead and of course I love Sepultura, but for me Cavalera Conspiracy is a very cool project indeed and songs like 'Killing Inside, Warlord, Torture' and 'Terrorize' show that. Ok I am not so keen on the new song they launch the set with 'Babylonian Pandemonium', it's not as hard hitting and Punky as other tracks they have produced and I think it goes back a little to early Sepultura material... it would fit in nicely on an early Sepultura album perfectly. The follow on song 'Sanctuary' which I really like on the album feels a little disjointed at first but as it get's going get's better and better and shows what Max and the boys can really do. I also like the fact it's really short like a good Punk song should be.

Igor hits a good steady beat to hit them into 'Terroize', which is one of the highlights of the bands set for me today. This song shows what the band can do when they put their mind to it, and shows the quality of the Cavalera Conspiracy albums. This songs is both technical and complicated at the same time, showing the quality of the song writing. classic song 'Refuse / Resist' is really popular with the crowd, but doesn't sound as a good as it usually does. But it does start a really huge circle pit so everyone is enjoying themselves, and isn't that the main point in when your putting on a live show to make the crowd enjoy themselves. And Cavalera Conspiracy have done this by playing this song.

'Sum of your Achievements' from Max's Nailbomb is very big and a good choice of material from that era of his life to play. Also Max manages to get some good crowd participation for this track. I love the track 'Torture' it's so in your face and mixes up Metal and Punk so well. We then get a selection montage of Sepultura material 'Beneath the Remains / Desperate Cry / Dead Embroyonic Cells', which I think needed to be played with more excitement and lifeforce. You get a short version of 'Killing Inside', with it's killer distinctive riff... before your brought into more Sepultura numbers 'We who are not as Others' and 'Attitude'. The later of these 'Attitude' sounds great and makes you realise why you loved this band so much in the first place. Also the tribal buzz that made the band so famous in the first place, still works really well in the live arena.

'Warlord' sounds huge and heavy and fast and is probably the best track today in their set, but their cover of Motorhead's 'Orgasmatron' does work quite well. So when they end the set with 'Roots, Bloody, Roots', your taste buds have been totally destroyed and your ready for a rest. If you wanted to hear some old Sepultura material this was a great day for you, but if you wanted to hear Cavalera Conspiracy tracks then this wasn't such a great one for you. I think sometimes Max and Igor need to concentrate more on the different projects as separate things, than mixing them together. I think in this way it wouldn't all just get a little too similar, and the fans would really get what they want.
