De/Vision - Make a long awaited return the UK
***1/2
Nice melodies but they dance like your dad!
De/Vision ***1/2 finally bring their brand of German Synth-Pop to the London Islington o2 Academy for a long awaited show supporting Bristol lads Mesh. Years ago it was the other way round and now Mesh have been returning the favour to their tour buddies.
Starting off with the Pop / Electronica Kraftwerk esq 'Binary Soldiers' you realise how good singer / composer Steffen Keth voices is on the live stage and it makes the song come across really well. They then hit in with the heavy beats of the Kant Kanto remix of the song 'What's love all About' which is just fantastic and has a very catchy typically German bridge to it and sounds very Wolfsheim Esq another band from their homeland that makes great Electronic records.
Newish song 'Try to...Forget' is a glorious 80's sounding Electronic work that has quite a few different sequences in it that get your feet tapping, In places the vocals are Depeche Mode Esq and the song does sound a little like some of the bands earlier work. You can see why this band are so big abroad with audiences taking more to the Electronic sound than we do in the UK, even thou we are a country that has spawned some of the best Electronic acts after German. This was very apparent in the 80's with bands such as Depeche Mode, Erasure and OMD but England seemed to turn it's back on Electronic music a bit until the last two years were it seems to be making a resurgence in popularity.
For me the best track in the set is the quite outstanding 'Time to be Alive' that reminds me of nights out clubbing with my friends and getting in the mood for a good night out and it is done in a quite atmospheric and brilliant way tonight. They carry on their melancholy Electronica with 'Your hands on my Skin' a haunting little number that pulls you in to the diseppear of the song.
One of the most interesting songs in the set is the very German 'Kamikaze' which Thomas Adam takes vocal duties on and you just wish you had some lederhosen and a pint of beer in your hand while listening to it. This jolly little jitty is a lot of fun and a good segment to have in a set of Electronica Dance numbers, because it gives a good contrast from what the band normally do.
Ending the set with two great numbers the single off 'Popgefahr' called 'Rage'. The songs video looked like a Depeche Mode video take off of their hit single 'It's no Good', the single also had a feel of this song to. It's really catchy and down beat and hits you hard with it's catchiness and power behind the beats in it. While 'Flavour of the Week' has a keyboard based Euro Dance feel behind it, but still keeping their melancholy vibe at the same time. This band are great and the songs are so listenable that you will find yourself playing them over and over again. I personally suggest if you like Electronic music that you give De/Visiona good listen, I know I have now.
