Django, Django - Come back to Bristol!!!
***
A taste of Django, Django!!!
Django, Django *** are a British Alternative Indie / Rock band based in London, they actually formed at Edinburgh College of Art. Recently the band havebeen getting very popular, so I was looking forward to seeing their set supporting Belle and Sebastian. I have to admit, I have not really listened properly to the band before the show but I heard they are older than I thought... they got nominated for a Mercury Music Prize back in 2012. So I really didn't know what to expect, but I did know that the band had performed in Bristol before at the o2 Academy and other venues and I wanted to check them out then. But I sadly didn't manage to, so I made sure I turned up early to catch their set. But I kept on thinking they stole their name from a fruit drink, but I realised that was 'Um Bongo'.
All members of the band have a really good connection together, you can tell that they have been playing together for quite a while. Well as I said before 2012, which I am still surprised about... because I would have thought they would have been bigger than they are by now because they have been going so long. I think the best connection is between Vincent Neff (Singer / Guitar) and Jimmy Dixon (Bass), who seem to light up the stage. I think a lot of people will know Django, Django, from their single 'Default' which was played loads on the radio and I am sure was in some commercials.
My personal favourite songs from the band, both came from their Mercury Music Prize nominated self-titled album. And both of these are played tonight 'Waveforms', 'Hail Bop' and 'Default', which were highlights for me in the bands set, because they are the ones that I really know. The video for 'Hail Bop' actually has over one and a half million views on YouTube, which I was surprised by. Because they are supporting, and not headlining tonight. You would expect a band with so many views to be headlining Other songs for them like their single 'Tic Tac Toe' have similar amounts of view, which in my mind makes Django, Django a big band.
I wish I had taken more time before the show to check out their newer material like the single 'Tic Tac Toe', which i have listened to a bit now. Because I think if I had, I would possibly have enjoyed them more. I think Django, Django are a band that you really have to know the songs for to really enjoy.
I think they get a very good reception, from the crowd and their performance is just the right length. But I do have to say Django, Django are really not for me, they are a bit formulaic and repetative. I think they really could go so many more places with their music, they have some really good ideas. So I think they sometimes play things a little bit simplistic, their name gives me thoughts of craziness.... but I have to say you really don't get this from this band in their live performance. It's just generic, and like so many other bands... and I think this is why they have not made the step up to the next level.
I really want to be proven wrong, and I hope that next time I see them they are a little different. But I have to say I personally would not go out of my way to see them, but I can see where they fit in the modern World of music. And I think that they do fit well as a support to Belle and Sebastian, especially with the new music from the headlining act which I can actually hear elements of Django, Django in it. So I really can see why they picked them for the bill. Please make your own mind up about Django, Django, you can listen to their single 'Default' at the bottom of this page
