Enuff Z'Nuff - Show they define a era in London
***3/4
They do their own no so 'New Thing'!!!
Enuff Z'Nuff ***3/4 I have seen this band many times, with a few different line-up's and I actually think their performance at the the London, Kentish Town, o2 Forum, UK could be the best time I have seen them. I remember seeing them in Bradford and Nottingham (Of course at the Rock City), and they really took me back to my childhood. I have to say I have never been the biggest Enuff Z'Nuff fan myself, but friends of mine... really love them. And they where often on the car CD player, on strips all around the country. I hear they really influenced the band The Wildhearts, and you can hear that in moments throughout the set.
What I think is a little a shame about this performance, and one of the reasons I didn't score them higher. And that is because in such a short set, they see the need to play two covers of songs from The Beatles. If you have such a short time to play, you should be showcasing more your own material and not other people's. Even though I have to say their covers of 'Magical Mystery Tour' and 'Elenor Rigby' are actually very good, and I think they have been playing them for years. Enuff Z'Nuff are a fun band, and the newer members really bring that out during the performance moving around the stage nicely doing some cool stances. I do think Chip could move around a little more, but maybe he is keeping the music in place and commanding the band from the middle and feels he doesn't need to.
Chip Z'Nuff was not always the lead singer for Enuff Z'Nuff, they had Donnie Vie and Johnny Monaco on vocals in earlier days. But for me I don't think I remember a time without Chip being the singer, I maybe wrong because my friends where big drinkers and when I used to see them they kept handing my pints... and I thought it was rude not to drink them. I think these days when I don't really drink, I see the shows a little differently and maybe this is why I enjoyed seeing them live more this time. The second track in the bands set 'Kiss the Clown', is a Rock City floor filler off their self-titled album... and one of the songs I remember the best. Really launches the set in the right direction, like you are at an early Dogs D'Amour or gig by The Wildhearts.
This song is really lively, and shows Enuff Z'Nuff off at their best with live interactions with the crowd to go with this. 'Baby loves You' which I remember the video for and hearing a lot, is a real stadium Rock good feeling type of song. The kind you want to listen to when your having a good time, and I think a lot of people are having in London. I think if your around my age, you really couldn't ignore Enuff Z'Nuff's impact to the Hair Metal genre, which was lead by bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Def Leppard and later Extreme, Pretty boy Floyd. And 'Fly high Michelle' is a trippy Psychedelic Rock song that really got stuck in your head, This is a song that would fit really nicely on any 80's / 90's film soundtrack. Ending the set with their MTV friendly hit single 'New Thing', you realise that Enuff Z'Nuff are a band that is really defined by their era.
