Gentleman's Dub Club ***1/2 - Bristol Sounds was back for 2024, the Saturday having an amazing line of joint headliners the Gentleman’s Dub Club and The Skints, very ably supported by Dreadzone who are still bringing their Electronic Dub based sounds thirty years after forming. It the perfect backdrop for a summer festival, right by the river in central Bristol, the Reggae based day has brought out the crowds in Bristol, famed for it’s m multicultural society. The Gentleman's Dub Club albums have remained in the Reggae i-Tunes top forty since the date of their release, making them a really exciting band to check out.
Gentleman’s Dub Club end what has been a very well curated Sunday at Bristol Sounds, all the bands complimented each other perfectly and all have been well received by the crowd. They have a band uniform of white shirts and black ties, so actually it could be the Mormons, but when they start playing it’s definitely a band. During the second song, ‘Run for Cover’ a Rapper takes the stage and it seems he didn’t get the dress code memo, though it is soon clear that it was a member of The Skints.
I think the band title gives you a fair idea of the music they play, for those unfamiliar with them, with a bit of Electronica and ska thrown in for good measure too. They certainly have a collectively strong stage presence with the brass section and bare footed lead singer being most prominent between them. ‘Let a Little Love’ had the crowd and singer going with it’s Ska sound. Unfortunately by the end of their set the crowd had thinned a lot, I don’t think this was in any way a reflection of the band.
More a hot Sunday, things kicked off here around lunchtime, also being a Reggae day, in Bristol, a few members of the audience had certainly had a few herbs which may have chilled them a bit too much late in the day. But ultimately their loss for those that did go. The Gentleman’s Dub Club certainly fulfilled their end of the bargain in providing some great tunes to see us into the end of a wonderful weekend.
