Hailmary - Take you back to the 90's

September 26th 2015
London, Underworld, UK

***1/2

You will hear more from this band in the future.

Hailmary ***1/2 are a promising Rock / Grunge act from Perth / Melbourne in Australia, and tonight they are supporting Ugly kid Joe to a Sold Out!!! venue at the London, Underworld. Members of Hailmary were lucky enough to have toured with Ugly kid Joe and Skid Row, as part of the Dead city Ruins set up. So are friends with the guys in the headline band, and ready to give them a run for money with songs of their new EP 'Navigate the Sunrise'.

Hailmary are a band that have earned their space on tonight's bill from touring non stop, and you have to really respect that. They take influence in their sound from act like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Bush, Nirvana and AC/DC. Singer Kevin Curran has a really good presence and looks like he has come out of a Grunge band from the 90's, you know blue dirty jeans and bleached blonde hair.

You could see a lot of girls coming to see Hailmary just to see him, but this is a band that has a great deal of talent. They all know how to play their instruments, especially Paul Cush who does some great action and solo's on the guitar Also I think they have a great drummer in the form of Vas Shevtsov, who reminds me a lot of Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters). He is a great drummer, and I think Hailmary will have to go all out to keep him in the future.

They open their set with a storming stomper of a track 'Wake Up', which has a great Alice in Chains vibe too it with a big American Rock chorus. This song makes you pay attention to the band straight away, ok it's a little bit... what you have heard a million times before, but Hailmary do it really well and that is what makes them appealing.

I like it a little bit more, when they speed things up with the brilliant 'Liar in my Chair' which mixes up American Rock with Grunge and strangely a touch of Ozzy Osbourne. You see people getting more into it as they break into two songs I really like, firstly 'Monday Mundane' which has a Velvet Revolver / Scott Weiland tone to it.... mixed up with late commercial Nirvana.

'My Song' is taken from the bands new EP 'Navigate the Sunrise'.

Secondary the simple titled 'My Song', which is one of the more catchy songs in their set. The title track to their new EP 'Navigate the Sunrise', shows you what you can expect from their new CD. But it's 'Yellow light of Death', which makes the biggest impact on me and is my favourite track in the bands set.

Hailmary are a band that is stuck in the Rock / Metal scene of the 90's, but I like that scene and wish their was more bands doing this. They end the set with a song I don't really know that well, it said 'Good' on the setlist ... but I think it probably has a longer name. But by this time I probably was paying less attention, and was ready for Ugly kid Joe.

They did exactly what they needed to do a solid good warm-up performance, so as this I think they did really well. The question is, would I pay to see this band as a headline act?. Only time will tell, but if they are added again as a support act I would make sure I checked them out again. If your a fan of Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, Stone temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver or Nirvana... this is a band you must try.
