The Other Boleyn Girl is back with a new single!

Hannah Boleyn releases debut album ‘The Boleyn Affair’ in October,  so far she has a single ‘When you’re Gone’ and a number of high profile concerts under her belt having already supported acts as diverse as The Saturdays, Tinie Tempah, James Morrison and  UB40. Listening to the album this is not much of a surprise as it does have more than one side to this album right from the start, opening track ‘Tough Love’ certainly being more on the pop sound whereas second track ‘No hard Feelings’ has a violin based slightly darker edge.

This is followed by a track that had been previously released ‘So OK’ and the tone is set in what has been a popular theme in the last few years, with Adele in particular using it, that all the tracks are about lost love or relationships in general. This is not meant to be a criticism of this album in particular but I do sometimes wish female singer songwriters would find a new subject, but I guess it connects with the audience more than what socks their wearing.

Hannah is a talented songwriter who puts interesting sounds into her music, as the album went o it started making me think of a more poppy version of Florence and the Machine, certainly when including the electronic sounds in ‘Night Time Guest’ and the cover version of a classic 90’s Dance tune with ‘Show Me Love’ in this instance. There is an opportunity for her to develop her sound as they have done while carving out her own niche.

As it stands this album is a pretty good listen but for me does not stand out in quite a crowded genre, she is a very good singer and the tunes are well crafted but it misses the X-Factor if you like... and I don’t mean anything Simon Cowell related.  It had a habit of melting into the background at times. So overall I wouldn’t say off with her head to Hannah Boyeln but equally it would not go down in history from my side.
