Immolation throw London to into Everlasting fire

Immolation *** With Death Metal currently going through a second golden age where a new wave of bands are releasing future classics and classic bands are enjoying a second wave of popularity and playing bigger venues than ever its time Immolation finally get some rightful recognition.

Immolation are not only one the most under rated Death Metal bands but have always had massive respect from their peers and have one of the most consistent back catalogue's in the genre. Tonight the band came on, attacked and got out. It was the most no nonsense gig I have ever seen. The band walk on to an intro tape and blast straight into 'The Distorting Light' the opening track from their latest masterpiece 'Atonement'. The band plough through a good value for money fourteen song set, so everyone in the venue is happy.

The set is brilliantly thought out in terms of pace, two fast tracks a slow groovier one and switching between newer and older material constantly keeping the crowd on their toes. They basically work their way through the new album with older songs slipped between keeping a perfect balance. The band attack the songs with an energy of men half their age.

Guitarist Rob Vigna throws his guitar round in a dance like fashion moving with the riffs and groove of the song, much like in a hardcore band while encouraging the crowds with “hey, hey!” chants. Frontman Ross Dolan commands the stage and crowd with hardly saying a word. Three songs in he says Hi to the crowd and says they have a lot to play and they didn’t pay to hear him talk and he keeps interaction to a minimum, quickly introducing the next song and off they go again. It also goes without saying the crowd went absolutely nuts.

The bands just over an hour set flies by. It’s compact and to the point and without a second wasted. They got through it so quick they even threw in 'Close to a World Below' at the end which wasn’t on the setlist. As far as I am aware this is the bands biggest headline show to date in London and it looks like the band are rising above the second tier.

The have just been chipping away at the side-lines putting out perfect album after perfect album. While the other bands are splitting, reforming and putting out auto-pilot or lacklustre (or industrial) albums. A new generations of bands are cropping up with Immolation and incantation as their main influence. People are realising these guys have had the winning formula all along.
