Jimmy Sommerville - Back to Me

(CD Single Review)

****1/2

Well worth checking back to Jimmy!!!

So who remembers Jimmy Somerville....Okay he was really massive in the 80’s when he first appeared on the music scene with the trio Bronski Beat where the Scottish Jimmy co-founded the group with members Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek, the groups only album released in 1984 'The Age  of Concern' peaking at No.4 in the UK. He then left that group joining forces And more recognisable as one part of The Communards, releasing two UK top ten albums with the group and having a massive hit with a cover of 'Don’t leave me this Way' peaking at No.1.

Jimmy Somerville however never released any solo music till 1989 with the massive hit 'You make me feel (Mighty real)', his last single being released ten years ago in 2004 a cover of 'Ain’t no mountain high Enough'. 2014 brings a familiar sound with a modern edge to Somerville’s forthcoming single 'Back to Me', this would not go a miss from a George Michael compilation album. Though on first listen the track instantly draws you in with its brash, over produced intro with a reminiscing of Daft Punk’s hit single with Pharrell William’s 'Get lucky' meets his own melody of 'You make me Feel (Mighty Real)' tinged as it glides through the intro like a iced cold cocktail on a sunshine day, as you nod your head side to side to the “Woo ooh’s” by the backing singers as Somerville’s vocal’s hum nicely, building into the track with him repeating the line 'Back to Me'.

As the song leashes into a very much George Michael verse and chorus not a million miles of his track 'Outside', you can almost see a dancing Jimmy surrounded by half naked dancers as they waltz around him with micro hot pants, as Jimmy Somerville’s almost female vocal stances over the Funk meets camp Disco backdrop, as the track builds and builds with the odd trumpet thrown in for good measure and live sounding summer Samba. The track is the best I have heard from this musician and I like it instantly, it very much a summer sounding song with a modern twist which has presented the charts in recent times, his vocal strong, a mixture of himself, Alison Moyet and Lisa Stansfield. The track is vibey, lively and something which given the right promotion, exposure to the downloading public can warrant a top ten smash hit for this young man from Scotland whose last UK top fourty success was back in 1995.
