Joywave - How do you Feel?

(CD EP Review)

****

Electronic Joywave washes away the rest!

When I first heard Joywave's new EP, I was a little confused. The six piece American band have a unique sense of style and sound but they really do shine through in potential and creativeness, mixing Electronica and Indie Rock.

The first song 'Tongues' Feat. Kopps is a real groove driven Electronic song, with its massively catchy chorus melodies that you can dance to and feel normal. It's use of slightly abstract yet simple samples fit the song perfectly due to the vocalists Daniel Armbruster distinct vocals and melodic vocal lines.

This is my personal favourite song of the EP, due to how well everything works in the song, even though if anyone else tried the crazy ideas it wouldn’t work. The second Song 'In clover' Is a standard industry Electronica song, filled with lots of samples, lots of repetition and the odd bongo here and there.
In the early stages of you can tell it’s going to be a predictable song due to its instant use of a basic kick and samples.

Nothing interesting that you haven’t heard before on any radio station, but as the song progresses it grows in strength and matures into a good song due to the use of the vocals and the catchy chorus, but still a standard song in Electronica music. The third song 'Somebody New' takes the band and the whole EP into a new direction. This song makes sound like a mash up of the Arctic Monkeys, The Gorillaz and Foals. It is an immense song that you can really get your teeth into due to the raw bass and simple yet character driven riffs.  Its slow vocal lines verses and fast paced choruses really help you latch onto the song and really help the feel of the song.

The final song of the EP is 'Now' and instantly this song is catchy and stereotypical yet it works really well for them. The loud fast guitar driven drops into the verse and you start to realize how good this song is. The acoustic pre-chorus is perfect for bringing in the pumped up chorus melody after the chorus.
Overall this song is great and really sums up the band, using their Electronica and Indie Rock to its full potential, bring the band to the spotlight.
