Ricky and the band find their voices in Bristol

Kaiser Chiefs **** It's late June and we are outside, watching music in the West of England, one side of the stage is surrounded by water. No it's not what you are thinking, another wet Glastonbury but this year's Bristol Summer Series, Thursday night was the turn of the Kaiser Chiefs, with George Erza and Seasick Steve playing the other nights. Jessie J had been forced to cancel her planned performance on the subsequent Saturday.

While many may know Ricky Wilson for his stint judging on The Voice, tonight was all about the band. As you can imagine while playing a festival show which was effectively a warm up for Hyde Park the following night supporting The Who, the enigmatic front man was anything but subdued, from climbing on the upturned monitors to joining the crowd I don't think he stopped moving for a moment.

Of course it was also a night to bring out all the hits, which the crowd faithfully sung back every word of with 'Angry Mob' and 'Everyday I love you less and Less' getting early plays. There was time for a new one entitled 'Falling Awake' which was pretty much standard Kaiser Chiefs fare, but nice none the less to see they are planning on adding to that vast collection of tunes you can jump and down to all night.

Of course in the wonderful setting of Bristol harbour, with the tall ships in the background, the hits just kept coming 'Ruby', 'I Precict a Riot' which did include a stage invader but wasn't quite a riot... and even a wonderful version of The Who's 'Pinball Wizard' the crowds vocal chords got a good airing. I think they played this cover in respect of the band they were supporting the next night, and I think it's a rare treat.

The Bristol Summer Series is starting to really get established as part of the round of festivals, surrounded by history while bands like the Kaiser Chiefs continue to cement their place in the musical history books. Both the event and the band continue to go from strength to strength and as the sun started setting there was only one thing left to do, sing 'Oh my God' to an adoring audience to cap a great evening perfectly.
