Lila Rose - We.Animals
****
Talking to the animals, and getting some great ideas from them…
Lila Rose is a Canadian singer songwriter and her new album 'We.Animals' certainly has a story to tell. She has apparently listened to the sound of the surrounding world rather than just the people to try and create a more unique sound. General living humans seem to have been pretty much out of the equation in planning as the other reference is that she asked a clairvoyant, who actually said this album was not ready to be the next one, but she has gone with it anyway. Lets hope it does not upset the spirit world.
Whether or not he voices from the other side can make a influence on this the animal instinct is certainly there with a wide range of vocal sounds from the soft almost haunting qualities of the opening track ‘Stars’ to the more in your face sound of ‘Tracking’. From the second track on this album you can tell there is going to be a lot going on and that is no bad thing by me. Too many acts have an album of tracks that all sound the same, yes have your signature sound but explore that to the max which is exactly what Lila Rose does.
The electronic sound is ever present but it is added to with smatterings of Folk, Alternative Rock and on track ‘Now’ she even seems to throw a bit of an operatic sound in just to make sure all bases are covered. With the sometimes contrasting styles on show track by track this is not always the easiest album to listen to, but in a good way.
I like the pushing of the boundaries and the experimenting of the different sounds and styles. Right at the end we add a bit of a Classical flourish on the closing title track before showing the powerful sound that has really been holding it all the way through. Without wishing to pigeon hole but for reference I would say this is one for fans of the Portishead or Goldfrapp sound, and by the time you have I sure you will also be a fan of Lila Rose.
