Kevin from Lit talks to Music Trespass!!!

Music Trespass new girl Heather Lowe catches up with Lit's bass man Kevin Baldes in Reading for a little chat about music and touring and why this was time to do classic album 'Place in the Sun' tour !!! It's great to see bands like Lit coming back, so let's see what they had to say about it all. So let's go and find our 'Place in the Sun' and sit back and read this great interview.

Music Trespass: What made you pursue being in a band?

Kevin: I just liked Rock 'n' Roll and liked seeing it on TV, I liked hearing it and I just gravitated towards it. Rock 'n' Roll gave me a push in school to hang out with like minded people into Metal music. As you get older you don’t just want to listen to it anymore or collect the magazines, you want to be a part of it. I almost think everyone in Lit would give you the same answer.

Music Trespass: Who are your musical inspirations both as a band and personally?

Kevin: It was Heavy Metal that brought everybody together, the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, the majority of the bands in that era as that’s what helped bring everyone in the band together. Which is what we drew from to write our music when we were younger and to learn from.

Music Trespass; What personally made you start wanting to learn to play an instrument?

Kevin: To be honest with you I wanted to be the singer, but I was too young and I sounded like a little mouse and we also needed a bass player. I kind of knew how to play guitar a little bit, so I just picked up the bass and that’s how I became the bass player in Lit.

Music Trespass: Your music genre is classed at Alternative Rock, is that the sound you’ve been aiming for since the band started?

Kevin: To be honest with you, I’m not certain on what classification we are, as there are lots of influences and generations and everyone is into their own thing, although we are all into the same thing, each guy brings a different element to the table writing wise nowadays more so than fifteen years ago. I feel like there aren’t many bands like us but we’re still a Rock 'n' Roll band.

Music Trespass: Having not released an album since 2012 is there anything in the works for when you get back home?

Kevin: Not currently in the works, just finishing up. We kind of went from promoting the album to the fifteen year anniversary, and it’s re-launching us over here in the UK which is brilliant, and really nice. After this tour we’ll probably just go home, regroup and discuss what we want to do and what the next plan is and just take it week by week from there. However I am sure we will record some new music as we aren’t quitting any day soon.

Music Trespass: Is there a certain direction you are heading in since ‘The View from the Bottom’?

Kevin: That’s the hardest part of being in a band, because everyone’s into different music. I mean we get along fairly well, but for me I wouldn’t want to play anything a little more aggressive than say AJ and Jeremy would. Not saying that they wouldn’t want to play aggressive music but I just think there is different writing ways about us, so it’s hard to say which direction our future music will go. Everybody kind of roots for their own team musically when it comes to that.

Music Trespass: On the topic of albums which track have you enjoyed making the most, either in the studio and been proud to show to the World?

Kevin: That’s a hard question. We had a self titled album called the 'Black Album' and there was a few songs on that we were very proud of and excited to release. Even on previous shows we always play a song called 'Moonshine' from the 'Black Album'. There’s some writing on that, which is different from the other albums, I remember when that album came out and we were all very excited to get the album out. 'Looks like they were Right' ended up being the single, I love that song. There’s a lot of tracks on that album we were very proud of. Also 'Times like These' was another track we were all proud to see released.

Music Trespass: How do you feel about being back on the road in the UK?

Kevin: Love it! every interview we do, we get asked where our favourite place to play is and we always say the UK, because you know how to throw down and I feel that you guys as a majority you guys respect the music you’re into. It’s not recyclable to you guys. You all buy it and you’ll know that band for life and I love that. Back home if I’m into something I’m into it for life. Especially with growing up you’re kind of exploring the world and growing, and you have music to attach to that as it’s always going to be there when you get older.

Music Trespass: Which band have you enjoyed touring with most?

Kevin: In my entire career...?

Music Trespass: Yes!

Kevin: Thank god for that I thought you asking about the ones on this tour as it would be very hard to choose. I would have to say each tour has been very eye opening, and you learn a lot from each band. No doubt was one of my favourites and also The Offspring because we toured with them for the first time in Europe and it was a life changing tour. Then we toured with Garbage for two months over in the US which was fun as well. There’s been a lot of good times and fun.

Music Trespass: Do you have any amusing tour stories that you'd like to share?

Kevin: Yeah! There’s a lot of stories, but one that I feel the people reading this would enjoy is that we had a lot of tours with Foo Fighters... Dave Grohl is a God. We did a show with Foo Fighters in 1999 and it was up in Northern California and he came to our dressing room and I think he kind of knew that we were going home after that and asked if we wanted to fly home with him in his private jet as he was heading down to Burbank and we were like yeah, absolutely he had a baked potato, a t-bone steak and a bottle of crown royal and we brought a bottle of Jager along and Dave got annihilated I probably got more annihilated than Dave did. As soon as we got to the hotel, I wrapped myself around a fake tree in the lobby and threw up in it. I’ll never forget that.

Music Trespass: Any Advice for bands who are up and coming in the music industry?

Kevin: Stay focused, be yourself and you have to work your ass off. Don’t dick around, don’t be focusing on partying and doing drugs. You really need to hammer home into the music that you’re writing and your show and getting your name out as much as you can. Don’t piss on people on your way up, because they’ll piss on you, on the way down. Just be a good guy / girl, and don’t f**k off!
