LostAlone announce brand new album 'Shapes of Screams’ on April 7th through Graphite Records
Hugely exciting Derby three piece LostAlone are finally set to release their third album which was produced by Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Young Guns, Sharks) album ‘Shapes of Screams’ on April 7th through Graphite Records. Brand new single ‘Scarlet letter Rhymes’ set to be released around album as well, with brand new video ready to be released in the coming week.
A bit more about LostAlone and the making of ‘Shapes of Screams’ after a chance encounter with recent single ‘Love will eat you Alive’ on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show producer Dan Weller became a believer and reached out to the band with a view to taking on production duties for the next record. With over a hundred songs already demoed and a mandate of complete musical freedom work on ‘Shapes of Screams’ began.
“The threshold for greatness in rock music has been diminished, diluted into a formulaic and soulless metallic buzz where the completely generic is hailed as incredible. It was our responsibility to melody to make this album as a first wave of the fight back.” - Steven Battelle (LostAlone)
Mostly recorded deep in the English countryside, with forays into central London the twelve songs that make up ‘Shapes of Scream’ are a collection of fears and doubts and of hopes and of dreams. For a time the records working title was 'Guitar' due to (you guessed it) a ridiculous amount of guitar. An argument could be made for it being called 'Vocals' with some songs featuring over one hundred harmony parts on a single line.
Opener 'Crusaders' is a micro musical and appropriately was written on the walk home from a viewing Les Miserables, it also features a “tribute to the guitar” in the verses where guitars synonymous with certain iconic players are deployed for brief motifs in the style of each icon. The first song to be heard from the record The Bells! The Bells!! is cathedralic in performance and drops the world’s first ever “breakdong” when a stereoization of harmonised dings and dongs clatter like thunderous rain into the ears. 'Hostages' is a defiant fight against our own our own boundaries where 'Sombre Party' is an exercise in the contradictions of the heart.
Have no doubt that the judge who sentences us all at the start of 'Guilty' is fully authorised to imprison all who do not heed the lyrical warnings within this heavy shuffle. Apathy is a distained view on a modern ethos of incorrectness perfectly represented by Alan Williamson’s foundational Bass duel while Scarlet Letter Rhymes is a crushing anthem for a generation who don’t yet realise they need saving. MentalHealth and Requiem are according to Steven both written in a state of “intense dark side mining of the mind, exploration and cleansing”.
"Requiem is my my way of writing 'I was born to end this Way', self dream plagiarism technique wherein he steals a melody from a scene in his own dream. In this case the chorus is from a game show called 'Born to end this Way', ts melodic espionage of which I am both the perpetrator and the victim, 'Doooooooooomaggedon' is Helms deep heavy and features Mark Gibson’s tribal drums at their most ferocious. The album closes with a statement, the hymn like 'Breathing in the future exhaling the Past'.And if all of that didn’t whet your appetite to listen to this extraordinary album and band, I have no idea what will.
