LostAlone - Get caught up in the action in Reading!

Reading, Sub89, UK

****1/2
A furiously good set by Britain's hot talent!

LostAlone ****1/2 if you weren't lucky enough to catch LostAlone in December with The Darkness (Check Out! the review on this site) then you must have been happy when you found out they were supporting Welsh band The Blackout. The sad thing is Gerard Way (My chemical Romance) favourite band only have a short set today, because they are again playing support. LostAlone are just on the verge of releasing their highly anticipated third album, which is going to launch them into being a household name if it gets the right exposure. Grabbing influences from Muse to Queen and The Darkness they are a Indie / Alternative / Emo band that grabs your attention from the moment you hear them, and like InMe's Dave McPherson... LostAlone's Steven Battelle has a distinctive vocal tone that either you love or hate. You have to admit though he has a great range as his guitar playing is second to none. Like a young Brian May meets Matt Bellamy (Muse) but with his own sound pushed into the mix.

Opening with the last single 'The Bell's!, The Bells!!' off their yet to be released third album you can see the quality of the bands new material and how they have progressed through the last year. LostAlone have been playing recently a lot bigger venues than this has support to My chemical Romance, The Darkness and Evanescence but has not got an arrogancy that goes with a band on the rise like LostAlone are. When they blast into the frantic wall of sound that is 'Do you get what you pray For?' off their successful second album 'I'm a UFO in the City' which really launches off and Steven goes crazy flying in with his guitar like it's the last day of the Earth and UFO's are actually attacking.

Also in the first part of the set see's Steven going into the crowd to play his guitar amongst the crowd and get intimate and sweaty. Brand new song 'Guilty' includes a great repetitive melody and even leads to the band spelling out the title in the melody. This song leads in a dynamic way on to another new song 'Hostages' , that the crowd has already seemed to pick up on and know. 'Hostages' goes down really well and has a trendy steady bass line to it, that is played by Alan Williamson the Scottish one in the band. This song also has some great Brian May sounding Queen guitar licks woven into the structure to make it stand out more as a complexed piece of music.

The band go crazy for one of their best tracks 'Vesuvius' which Steven gets his jacket caught up on a string in and brings it to a halt all of a sudden but luckily he does this near the end because he was getting too into the track. He brings out a special two headed guitar for 'Crusader', which a fan goes "Cool" too and Steven goes "Nobody has ever called this guitar cool before, they have said what is that and Oh! my God but never Cool! so I am happy now!" he also says that he keeps on having to drop songs from the set because he talks too much in between them.

'Crusader' is said to be written about and from ideas from 'Les Miserables' the musical but who knows if that is actually true, but it does have that kind of feel to it. The crowd cannot believe it when Steven get's his sleeve caught on the string again during this song that brings it to end before time again, Alan says "Take that damn jacket off!!!" but there is only one song to go so as Queen says "The show must go on...".

They end on one of my favourite songs 'Love will eat us Alive' which is always good to end a set on and has a killer guitar solo / intro and is really catchy and has great lyrics "When your caught in a Web, with no will to survive" this is a song I advise to you to listen to, to get into the band. If you have not seen LostAlone then see them quickly because this is a band that is going to explode very soon and you will have to see them in a big venue.

LostAlone's single 'The Bells!, The Bells!!' is Out Now and the album is coming in the spring so keep your eyes on Music Trespass for more news and reviews in 2014.
