A legend really pulls out all the stops!!!
Michael Monroe ***** is always a breathe of fresh air, …. years on from when he first started and he still does his best to put on a great show. Not pulling back at all ever in any performance, Michael Monroe shows why more young bands need to look out what a legend can do.
Because their are not many new acts coming out these days, who have a stage presence that can be compared to Hanoi Rocks singers. Where you can see Michael is cleaver is that he always has the right members in his band, from past members like Andy McCoy (Hanoi Rocks), Ginger (The Wildhearts) and Dregen (Backyard Babies).
In his current band he has almost the same line-up as he recorded 'Horns and Halos' and 'Sensory Overdrive' with Steve Conte (New York Dolls) guitar, Sami Yaffa (Hanoi Rocks / New York Dolls) bass and Karl Rockfist drums. They are joined by Rich Jones (Amen / Black Halos / Yo-Yo's / The Loyalties) guitar, who recorded the new album 'Blackout States' with them.
He has though large shoes to fill because Dregen (Backyard Babies) who played on 'Horns and Halos' and Ginger (The Wildhearts) who played on 'Sensory Overdrive'. But if you listened to 'Blackout States', you can see he has really done a good job at doing it. Like opening number the single '78', which launches things into motion in the really right way. This is not only about one man, this is a band unit that really know how to play great Rock 'n' Roll music.
'Oriental Beats' a Hanoi Rocks classic sounds great, but is really up staged by Michael's 80's classic 'Man with no Eyes', which is shockingly brilliant tonight. Sounding as good as it did when it first came out, if not better. Another one of my favourite Demolition 23 track is ‘Hammersmith Palais’ is always one of the highlights of any Michael Monroe set.
No Michael Monroe set is the same, without loads of costume changes and him doing the splits and of course some sax and harmonica action. In recent years Michael has been delivering some great pogo action that even Iggy Pop would have been proud of, and his lively on stage presence is just a joy to watch. This is really brilliant stuff, that any Rock 'n' Roll fan needs in his or her life, and I have to say Michael and the rest of his band really look amazing.
Ending the set off with so many great tracks from Hanoi Rocks’ ‘Malibu beach Nightmare’ to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Up around the Bend’ and his solo hit ‘Dead, Jail or Rock ’n’ Roll’. Not to mention closing number The Heartbreakers song 'I wanna be Loved', and the really powerful Hanoi Rocks number 'Tragedy', which is a real stadium Rock song.
Michael Monroe is back at his best and hitting a town near you again soon, and a couple of small shows with Alice Cooper in Plymouth and Swindon. Before Alice rejoins the Motley Crue tour... but watch out Alice... Michael Monroe might just give you a run for your money. This was one Hell of a night in Camden, and I am glad I was there.
