My life Story - Bring the Brit-Pop sound back to London

March 2nd 2024
London, 100 Club, UK

Getting to know Jake Shillingford!!!

My life Story in the 90’s took the charts by storm with ‘12 Reasons why I love Her’,  ‘Strumpet’ and ‘Sparkle’, when Brit-Pop was at the height of it’s popularity. We managed to catch up with Jake Shillingford the mastermind behind the band at their second Sold Out!!! show at London’s infamous and World famous venue the 100 Club which has seen classic shows by all the greatest artists that have graced the music scene for decades.

Music Trespass: Your great new album ‘Loving you is killing Me’, keeps to your sound but has a slightly new edge to it. How were you feeling when you wrote this, and tell us about a few of your favourite tracks off the record?

Jake Shillingford: We wrote it over the course of a year, the aim was to record songs as soon as we’d written them, attempting to instantly capture the spirit and emotion and hermetically sealing in the freshness. It’s kind of the opposite to a concept album. I didn’t really want to give ourselves time to over-think a grand plan, in some ways we are recapturing the gung ho spirit of when the band started out in 1985. It’s our least pretentious and most direct record.

I hope the emotion of how I was feeling at the time comes across on each track, we tinkered with a lot of styles on the record. It starts with a New Wave guitar track with an old drum machine and finishes with a grandiose epic film trailer as the closer. It’s hard to pick a favourite but I really like how ‘Numb, Numb, Numb’ came out. It was the first song we wrote and its sound palette gave us a blueprint for the rest of the album.
