Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - A show to never forget
****2/3
Shocked by the pure energy of the show!!!
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ****2/3 is an artist I can't believe I have not seen live yet, because I have been into him for so many years. Nick Cave actually attended one of my bands shows, at
the London, Purple Turtle to my amazement. So I felt really good about repaying the favour, and to be catching his show. I felt excited, but not know what to expect. How would Nick command a festival
stage, and get his brand of Alternative Indie / Goth / Gospel / Soul sound to a festival audience.
Coming out furiously to the up tempo 'Get ready for Love' which see's Nick launch himself apon the audience.Their is a platform that goes all down the front row of the audience, meaning Nick can get really close to fans and sing right next to them. This means that Nick has created a real connection with his fans, he is not scared to meet them and give them time. Even later in his set, he stops mid song to sign a fans record which he has taken with him to the show. Their are so many elements and sounds in a set by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, from the haunting 'O Children', which has a very Gospel esq sound to it that really sinks into your brain. To 'Bright Horses' which contains some nice moments and sounds that you have never heard before, this is a truly unique concert that blows the onlooker away in some many ways.
Like when you remember Elvis was born in 'Tupelo', one of my favourites which just rotates round your brain and you can't forget. So when he get's to his infamous movie soundtrack hit 'Red right Hand', the crowd are really enjoying the concert. If you have watched any movie in the last ten years, you are bound to have heard this song. For a few years it was everywhere (I think it was in a few Tarantino films?). I will have to watch some of my movies again, to remember which films it had a impact in... I know it was in the Wes Craven film 'Scream'. "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a Tooth' rings out and you know it's the iconic Goth esq. number 'The Mercy Seat', one of the first songs most people hear when they are getting into Nick Cave.
'Higgs Boson Blues' is another stand out track in a set of stand out songs, everyone is as a good as the last. And the onstage antics of Warren Ellis are quite captivating to watch, from throwing his violin into the air to spitting every five minutes into a bucket. He has a great onstage persona, he kind of walks around the stage like he is a drunk out of an old Western film... and it just looks too cool for school. Sometimes, I think he might even drop the violin but he never does. Another things that is cool is that they are joined by a small gospal choir of three for a few songs on the backing, this adds some special to their sound.
Nick Cave comes back onto the stage solo, and sits at the piano for a version of his amazingly beautiful song 'Into my Arms'. I thought this was going to be a highlight of the set for me but was actually a low point, in a way this was not Nick's fault. But the audiences, who sing the chorus for the song like they are watching a bad musical theatre production. The crowd really kill the atmosphere for the song, and turn one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard into something new... which made me a little angry.
Newer songs like 'Vortex' have already deserved their places in the set, this one in paticular has a really good melody to it. That actually works better live, than on the recording. I liked these song on the recording, but I loved hearing it live... it really has been given new life. They end the set with what could be now my favourite Nick Cave song 'The Weeping Song', this is a great anthem that leaves you wanting more. This was a night that I will never forget, I am so impressed by Nick Cave live. And he did this amazing show in a festival atmosphere, and made it seem like you were in a little room with him. I have no idea how he did this, but it is a show I will be going to see again.
