Orange is the new Black - TV Soundtrack

(CD Album Review)

**1/2

Another predictable soundtrack!

I have to say I have not watched this TV series yet, but I have put it on my list to check out. It's apparently a new American comedy TV programme created by Jenji Kohan. And on Wikipedia it's quoted to be a series revolves around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a bisexual woman living in New York City who is sentenced to fifteen months in a women's federal prison for transporting a suitcase full of drug money to her former girlfriend, Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) who is an international drug smuggler. The offense occurred ten years prior to the start of the series, and in that time Piper had moved on to a quiet, law abiding life among New York's upper middle class. While in prison, Piper is reunited with Alex and they re-examine their relationship and deal with their fellow inmates.

The soundtrack contains twelve tracks including the fabulous Regina Spektor, Kelis, Baby Face and the legendary Velvet Undground and Nico. I have not always liked all the music by Regina Spektor but always liked her use of imagery and the fact she always tries new things. 'You've got Time' though is probably one of the best tracks I have heard her do, it sounds a little like Placebo in places. The underlining riff could have been off their album 'Meds' maybe something like a slightly slowed down 'Bitter End' and this is a really good thing. I think I would find myself playing this track and it would sound great on an Indie night with old classics like Feeder, Hole and Ash and of course Placebo.

Regina Spektor (Pictured Above)

I know series are full of different events and this is reflected by the music in them, but this sound track the Regina track doesn't really go with the other tunes on the album because the other tracks are more Soulful and Funky or atmospheric from the classic Betty Davis song 'Walkin up the Road' and 'Move and groove Together' by classic Soul man Benny Latimore to the Funky new groove of Kelis sexy 'Milkshake' which brings up the pace a little. The Velvet Underground and Nico really set a good chilled atmosphere with their song 'Sunday Morning' and some of the other artists set a good light hearted scene with their tracks like the funny 'Chicken' by Nancy Cassidy.

For me it's not really my thing to listen to as a soundtrack, but I think a lot of people would love this. If your into light 60's and 70's music that set a scene of the time you might love this album. It's full of a few classic numbers but I do not think I will find myself going back to it in the future and I don't think I would check out the series based on this soundtrack, but I will give it a try because you never
know what would surprise you,
