The Popdogs - Cool cats for Pop Dogs

(CD Album Review)

**

Do we really need a Popdog!

This band has hints on Elvis Costello and Silver Sun if they were a little softer. It's a cross between Indie / Pop / Surf and Pop Punk and it has a soft Rock vibe. The cover of the album depicts a dog in silly glasses and a hat. I wonder if that is a Popdog. The first track 'Kelly's On' is a little catchy number that trundles on by and is very catchy and a little annoying like most of the tracks on this album and they all sound a little similar. They do have some great Punkier Beach Boys influences on the track 'Kissin' Alicia' which is a very listenable track.

The band hail from Lincoln and say their influences come from The Beatles, Big Star, Ramones, Material Issue, The dB's, REM but I can hear other influences in their sound but it is a Retro sound that has been given a re-vamp for 2013. 'High Time' has an American 70's vibe to it and is really radio friendly you can imagine them playing late at night and people chilling to it in their car.

'Last to New York' continues this vibe like the rest of the songs on the album. This is just a little too mono tone for me and a lot of it just sounds a little similar, It's not bad or offensive but it doesn't really go anyway maybe The Popdogs are just cool cats playing it cool and chilling back on this release.
