Pretty boy Floyd - Turning London into the Sunset Strip

August 25th 2022
London, Camden, The Black Heart, UK

****2/3

Hope this is not the 'Last Kiss' for Pretty Boy Floyd!!!

Pretty boy Floyd ****1/2 finally hit The Black Heart in London, after the show having to be rescheduled due to Covid-19. And I have to say this is one of the shows I personally have been looking forward to for quite a while. If you are a 80's / 90's American Rock fan, then you must have dreamt like me of Rockin' out on the Sunset Strip in LA. Well one of the difinitive Sunset Strip bands was Pretty boy Floyd, and for me that never got the oppertunity of doing this. I had to imagine that The Black Heart in Camden, London was the Roxy, down on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. Well you think this would be hard, well it wasn't.

Ok the venue is smaller, but the atmosphere was electrifying with everyone singing every note from the opener 'Leather boys with electric Toyz'. The title track of their infamous record, which is now a Rock classic and an album that all fans of Glam Rock / Metal, Hair Metal would have to have in their collection. There is quite a few leather boyz and girls in the crowd tonight, everyone has dressed in the best gear and are ready to Rock. We all know that Pretty boy Floyd have gone through a few line-up changes over the years, and for some that would effect their enjoyment. But why should it when the line-up Steve "Sex" Summers has put together is brilliant, they really know how to do the music justice.

This touring line-up consists of course Steve on Vocals, as well as Nick Mason (Drums), Criss 6 (Bass) and Diego "Ashes" Ibarra (Guitar), all really accomplished musicians who have played in well known bands before Pretty boy Floyd. They really know how to make the show fun, and have a great connection with the audience. Especially when they bring new life to the bands cover of the Motley Crue hit 'Toast of the Town', and mega Hair Metal anthem 'Rock and Roll (Is gonna set the night on Fire)'. Not to mention telling you about having forty eight hours to Rock on the hit '48 Hours', which is a song that always goes down so well live.

I saw Pretty boy Floyd before at the London, Underworld actually over the road in Camden. They played with Bang Tango and had revolving musicians that played the songs of both bands with Steve and Joe Leste coming on to do their bands songs. Now in 2022 the band are so much better, they have recording and touring band members... that have a much stronger connection together and this shows up so well onstage. There are so many great moments which include the heartfelt 'I wanna be with You' and 'The Last Kiss', a song I must have played over a million times when I was a kid.

I have to say I don't know why they didn't want to play 'The Last Kiss' for years, because this is one of my personal favourite songs. I think they thought it was a little too Pop and easy listening, but all Rock bands have their Pop moments. But I think this is a real shame, because I know other fans really wanted to hear it... and this was a very special chase for me to hear it done live. I have to say I am lucky to see Pretty boy Floyd in such a small venue, because to me they should be up their with Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. And I can't understand why they are not, they are a real Stadium Rock band. I think their was a few bands that were kind of left out a little like Faster Pussycat and the Welsh equivalent to Poison - Tigertailz a band I also love.

Since Covid-19 and Lockdowns I personally have struggled going back to gigs, but in the two years where there was hardly any shows. I could only dream of a show like this, and I am so glad that it actually happened (Even though it was a few years later). Because I really enjoyed myself.... and I have to say I was Rockin' for '48 Hours' after, and I really did set the night on fire that night and so did Pretty boy Floyd. Who showed what a true Rock performance should be like, bassist Criss 6 said to me after... he has never seen a Journalist / Photographer Rockin' so much to them down the front and he was really imprressed. I think the fact their was a journalist in the front page with their notepad next to me, really got his back up. And he loved the fact I was enjoying the show, for me Yes! it is work... but their is no reason I couldn't enjoy watching a Rock band that I love. Also why did I need a notepad, when I knew all the songs and it was a concert I will never forget.
