Primitai - Are one of Britians most hopeful Metal bands!

Joe Denby catches up with Primitai drummer Chris Chilcott just before they go onstage opening up for Sepultura.

Music Trespass: How are you today?

Chris: I am doing very well thanks, We are currently on tour with Sepultura and it's going great and really excited to be playing London.

Music Trespass: How is the tour with Sepultura going?

Chris: Yeah it's been going really well. We have been playing to packed out crowds every night. It's a very hardcore select crowd that Sepultura have so it's hard to win them other but that is something we enjoy doing. It's great to play a show were it's like, people during the first song are very wary and curious but going crazy towards the end.

Music Trespass: You've been touring quite a bit now have you grown more accustomed to it?

Chris: Yeah we know more of the pitfalls, that bands can fall into a bit more on the first tour. We know a bit more of what not to do then what to do! We don't get hammered every night like we used to and there is a certain maturity to it now. At the end of the day the main reason we are out here is for that fourty five minutes on stage. That's what we love doing and we are going to jeopardies that.

Music Trespass: Tell us about your new album 'Rise Again'.

Chris: Well we started writing it around July 2012 and spent about a year working on it. We felt we had a really strong album with 'The Line of Fire' so that set us hitting the ground running and we wanted to make it 100% perfect before we released it to the world. We recorded it in England and sent it out to Fredrik Nordstrom to mix and master it and it came out absolutely fantastic. To have him on the album and what he did with it. You always have a vision of the album you want to make but you never quite get there but with this I think we did. We couldn't be prouder of it. Also we have Richie Faulkner from Judas Priest guesting on it as well which was a honor.

Music Trespass: Yeah, how did that come about?

Chris: Well we have the same management agency. The opportunity to play someone who is in Judas Priest and someone who is such a good guitar player was just awesome.

Music Trespass: Did you manage to get any sneak previews or any info on the new Judas Priest album out of him

Chris: Ha, ha! No unfortunately he kept pretty hush, hush about it! It's all under lock and key!

Music Trespass: This is your first album with Tom Draper. How has he fit into the band?

Chris: He has such a Bluesy influence and a kind of Pink Floyd vibe to him. So rather then just being about speed he has brought a lot of soul to the band. We have never sounded as good as we do now.

Music Trespass: The band has been going now for ten years what advice would you give to musicians just starting out?

Chris: Basically if you don't enjoy doing it don't do it because if you're expecting money or girls or getting hammered every night. The only reason you should do it is, is to get up onstage and give it your all. I do not get that feeling anywhere else and if you're not having fun doing it then quit straight away.

Music Trespass: Over the last ten years what is been a real stand out moment for you?

Chris: Playing Bloodstock festival when Alice Cooper headlined. I named my first band after one of his songs it was called 'Snake Bite' or something like that. So being able to share a stage with him was a honor that was probably my biggest achievement.

Music Trespass: How do think things are in the industry at the moment?

Chris: I think it's slowly starting to get better. When downloading really took off a lot of industry people were panicking and were pretty crap at dealing with it but people are starting to realize that if they don't support the music they like, they have realized that if they don't go to shows, buy the merch then bands aren't going to survive and on the other end bands aren't really being selfish anymore they just want to make enough to make another album and keep going.
I read something the other day about what bands get paid and what cut they get but I do not know where they got their figures or information from because I don't know any bands that are getting paid that!

Music Trespass: Have you noticed A resurgence of vinyl recently?

Chris: Yeah! I think people want something with a bit more value, I mean we still have MP3 it's the easier way to listen to music but I like vinyl I am proud to have one of the original Guns 'n' Roses albums with the original cover. I just think vinyl's a nice thing to have.

Music Trespass: Judas Priest or Iron Maiden?

Chris: Oh! you got me there! No disrespect to either but personally I've always been a Maiden fan but I love both! but yeah! Iron Maiden.

Music Trespass: Favorite album?

Chris: Well I love 'Powerslave' and all the rest but for me they have always been about the live experience and they have done some of the best live albums so for me it's 'Live after Death'.
