Seagirls - Are a very promising act

Ship shape and Bristol Fashion

Seagirls are from a London based all male band, so no girls or any obvious connection to the sea. When the crowd started chanting their name before they took the stage, it sounded as if they were waiting for seagulls, but luckily there were none of those either so the chips were safe. But Bristol has a long maritime heritage so perhaps it is a good stop on their first ever UK tour.

Yes that’s right, this is their first UK tour and they had people chanting their name before the show. I had to double check before writing this as I thought perhaps they were local to Bristol, hence all the avid fans. But no they already possess an entourage of groupies and remember on their first tour and they said they had not been here before. So I guess the question is do they live up to the hype?

Huw Stevens and Annie Mac of Radio 1 are raving about Seagirls both playing their singles including  ‘What For’ which they opened their set with. This set the tone, the venue is a back room of a pub style venue but the sound could be filling an arena, their Indie Rock sound is already well established and it appears they have being doing this for years with the confidence and presence on stage. Despite the set only being eight songs they managed to fit a bit of a Classic Rock sound in their too.

‘Heavenly War’ and final track ‘Call me Out’, their other two singles to date were also lapped up by the young audience, most of the front couple of rows being all female too. These guys really are getting noticed by the music fans and the music press alike. I hope they are given time to continue to hone their sound and not pushed too far too quickly. There is already the making of something big here and next time they are in Bristol, much as I like the Exchange, I think we’re going to need a bigger boat.
