Seether - Show they are one of the best Post-Grunge bands around!!!
****
Seether go all out to impress in Camden!
Seether **** take to the stage of the London, Electric Ballroom, UK on a school night at the end of summer and considering this the Camden venue is packed. If you ever wanted proof that Grunge is not dead, Seether and support band LTNT solidly prove exactly that with their festival warm-up Sold Out!!! show. This is a great fact in it's self, because there are so many big bands playing in London tonight... so they had a lot of other bands to compete with.
The crowd seemingly does not move after LTNT go off stage, because the anticipation for Seether is almost tangible and Post-Grunge fans would rather skip a visit to a bar than lose their spot. The audience reactions actually play a big part in tonight, creating a really exciting atmosphere, and the place explodes when Seether opens their set with 'Gasoline'.
Shaun Morgan’s vocals reverberates across the audience which is mainly people in their twenties and thirties, people supposedly who grew up with Kurt Cobain’s voice lulling them to sleep. Heavy guitar riffs are accompanied with Grunge vocals and catchy, soulful lyrics supported by classy image of the band all wearing unbuttoned striped shirts over t-shirts. London and the Electric Ballroom in Camden is packed. If you ever wanted proof that Grunge in not dead, Seether and support band LTNT solidly prove exactly that with their Sold Out!!! show.
Sometimes you do wonder during the performance why Shaun has decided to go on stage right, rather than go in the middle of the stage... where most vocalist reside. This is really unusual but does not effect the way they come across on stage, they have the rawness and edge they always did from the start. As they the distinctive drums kick in for 'Needles', the place really comes alive, and the chorus sounds so big and like Silverchair they really know how to Rock out on stage. I really love his Scooter War (Cold) Esq. vocals on this song, it really gives it a distinctive tone... that I really love.
'Rise above This' is such a great song and it comes across even better live, than it did on the single version that I loved. I think this is a song that grows in your mind every time you listen to it. And when this song is backed up by 'Driven Under' and 'Fine Again' slightly slower songs it really gives the band a different contrast and gives you a break from jumpin' around to the faster numbers. 'Fine Again' has a real Nirvana feel to it, and you can see that Seether are so influenced by the Seattle band. The thing is Seether are a really intelligent band, they know that mixing up songs from different albums keeps everyone happy.
'Broken' is still a beautiful song, even when sung without Amy Lee (Evanescence) who Shaun was dating at the time of recording it. This track was included in the 'Punisher' movie. After 'Broken' Seether's drummer John Humphreys was left alone on stage for a wild drum solo, this was really enjoyable to watch and a great highlight to the show. They then get a little melodic with the brilliant 'My Disaster', which maybe isn't as lively as some other moments in the set,,, but really has a punch of it's own.
Newish song 'Words as Weapons' shows where the band are going with their music in the future, in someways almost goes into 30 Seconds to Mars or Foo Fighters territory so shows this band have the ability to be a band that could headline festivals in the future. This like Country Song which has a Five finger death Punk, Brantley Gilbert or even Jason Aldean Country feel to it... is so more commercial than some of their other material so it's American mass appeal is a really good thing. But I am not sure it really worked so well in Camden, London.
The band really up their game for the end of the set with their brilliant new son 'Nobody praying for Me', which should have been an even bigger hit than it was. But maybe it was just a little too slow for some Seether fans, but loved by a lot of the die hards. The catchy 'Fake It' and the monster hit 'Remedy' just make people go crazy for one last time. Especially 'Remedy' which killer riff is just one that makes you want to jump up and down and go bat sh*t crazy.
This was a great show, and showed of that Seether unlike Nickleback have not lost their edge. The only low point for me was that so many people spent half the concert recording the show on their phones, but that was not the bands fault. Also if you love seeing your Grunge bands presented old school, then the fact they bring out the Nirvana / Hole Esq. flowery dresses is just amazing to see. Grunge me did look so cool, dressed in dresses with crazy make up.
This is a band that you have not seen the best of yet, I think their best albums are still to come and Grunge is making a comeback. So it was really nice to see them in this small venue, and I will be going to see them again. Also this show as a warm-up for the festivals, sure made you wish you were seeing them as well out on an open stage so sure did the trick. Seether were all warmed up and ready to go!!!.
