Smash into Pieces - Turn the Christmas lights on at the Islington, o2 Academy!!!
November 30th 2023
London, Islington, o2 Academy, UK
****1/2
An electrifying perfromance
Smash Into Pieces ****1/2 delivered an electrifying performance at their first headline show in London, hosted at the o2 Academy, Islington, and it was nothing short of a sonic explosion that left the audience buzzing. Despite the somewhat limited movement from lead singer Hedman Sörbye, the band compensated with an incredible display of energy and engagement. The dynamic duo of Benjamin Jennebo and Emanuel Magnil, who replaced for this tour Per Bergquist, dominated the stage with their relentless energy and constant interaction with the fans at the front.
Magnil took it a step further, breaking the barrier between the stage and the audience by diving into the crowd, fist-pumping with fans, creating an unforgettable moment that will linger in the memories of those lucky enough to witness it. APOC, the band's drummer, added to the excitement by throwing merchandise into the crowd, intensifying the connection between Smash into Pieces and their dedicated fans. The atmosphere was electric, and the crowd's enthusiasm matched the band's energy, turning the o2 Academy, Islington into a mosh pit of passionate fans.
Despite Sörbye's relatively subdued stage presence, the rest of the band compensated with a stellar performance that showcased their musical prowess. The setlist was a rollercoaster of emotions, featuring hits like 'Wake Up', 'Let me be your Superhero' and 'Forever Alone'. The addition of a cover of Tears for Fears' 'Mad World' was a surprising and delightful twist that showcased the band's versatility. A special highlight of the evening was when Susanna Aleksandra, the lead singer of the support band Cyan Kicks, joined Smash into Pieces on stage for a mesmerizing rendition of 'Boomerang'. The collaboration added an extra layer of excitement to an already explosive performance, demonstrating the camaraderie and mutual respect between the bands.
The only downside to the night was the venue's capacity, as the show was completely sold out. With the band's undeniable charisma and growing fanbase, it's clear that Smash Into Pieces may need a larger venue for their next London headline show to accommodate the increasing demand. In conclusion, Smash Into Pieces' gig at o2 Academy, Islington was a triumph, showcasing not only their musical prowess but also their ability to connect with fans on a personal level. This performance solidified their status as a force to be reckoned with in the Rock scene, leaving the audience eagerly anticipating their next move.
