SOiL - Talk to Music Trespass during their massive UK tour!
SOiL dig up the dirt to Joe Denby!
Joe Denby speaks bassist and SOiL founding member Tim King during their UK tour!
Music Trespass: How are you today?
Tim: I'm doing good man, it's been a busy day. We have our business partners with today so there's alot of meetings going on.
Music Trespass: Tell us about this current tour your on.
Tim: The tours going great it's SOiL, American Headcharge and HED P.E we have two shows left in England one of those being tonight and the shows have mostly been Sold Out!!!.
Music Trespass: It's testament to your longevity, if you think these bands came as the second wave of Nu-Metal. At least you were lumped in with those bands by the media at the time, but most of the bands have outlasted the bigger bands of the time and many of the band such as yourself are still touring and still have big audiences.
Tim: Well, I wouldn't call it a revival or anything like that but the bands just keep putting out quality products and people still respond in a positive way and it's great to see the fans are coming out and new younger fans are coming out so a new generation are discovering these bands aswell.
Music Trespass: What I meant was where music trends go round in circles a lot of band from the late 90's and early 2000's seem to be enjoying a second wave.
Tim: Yeah, we were never part of the Nu-Metal thing we were more Rock. We got thrown in with that but it was fine because we got a lot of success back then. It's allowed to keep going and enjoy that second wave. Our friends in Sevendust are still going and having that as well.
Music Trespass: Lets talk about your latest album 'Whole'.
Tim: It's our first album back with our original singer Ryan McCombs and what we did, it was me Adam Zadel (Guitar) and Ryan McCombs (Vocals) and we just wrote from the heart. We wanted to make a real aggressive record, not that we wanted it to be classic soil but we had three original counter parts in it and it just went for it and knocked it out of the park. Will Hunt who plays for Evanescence and Black Label Society drummed on the album. He's just one of the best drummer's out there and you can really feel the magic on there. It's the best drumming we've ever had on any of our records by far. So with all the elements combined we came up with a great SOiL record. It's been well received and the fans have really taken to it.
Music Trespass: The album was crowd funded wasn't it?
Tim: Yeah the actual recording was crowd funded, we needed a distribution company to actually release it but we didn't want them to have any say on how the record went. So we funded the recording of the album through a crowd funding campaign so we could make the album we wanted to make and record with who we wanted to record it with and we could make the songs, our final say was our final say so that's how it came out.
Music Trespass: Obituary just did a similar thing with their latest album. It's worked out great for them and obviously yourselves. So what you think of crowd funding in general? do you think it can go on to be a big thing? I'm a fan of it personally.
Tim: You get things in return, you get the album early you can get different packages. You get something for your contribution, your paying in advance. I think bands like ourselves and Obituary did it the smart way. We used the money to record the album but we put it through a good infrastructure. We put the album out through AFM Records and Pavement Entertainment in the States, and Obituary used Relapse. You still need a label, the bands that think they can just go out there and do it themselves find without that backing their finding themselves falling short.
Music Trespass: Well I've recently seen the band Solstice just crowd funded a tour so the possibilities are endless aren't they?
Tim: I don't know if will do it again but we did and it worked out for us just fine.
Music Trespass: So lets talk about Ryan coming back to the band, he originally came back with the tenth year anniversary tour for the 'Scars' album. How did it go from there?
Tim: Originally it was lets see how it goes, we hadn't worked together in so long and we were rebuilding our friendship and putting the past behind us, we were just going to do that tour and just see how it went. We didn't know what was going to happen afterwards. We had so much fun on that tour and we got along so well and had such a good time playing. We felt that original energy that we had the first time around. We decided to keep on doing shows and that led to us writing new material and that led to Ryan coming back to the band full time and it became Soil again.
Music Trespass: How about the two albums you recorded with AJ Cavalier. Are those songs put to the side now? or is Ryan happy to play them?
Tim: We've discussed it. We have so much in a catalogue with Ryan. He is happy to do some songs from that period there just hasn't been the right timing for it and I think eventually we will but right now we're not playing anything off those records.
Music Trespass: So what's next for SOiL after this tour?
Tim: Actually we were just in a meeting with our agent discussing our next move. We're planning things right now so some time before the end of the year we'll make an announcement. Probably some obscure stuff, we've done a lot of America and we've been to the UK a few times now so probably go to some places we've never been to before.

Music Trespass: What music have you been listening to lately?
Tim: I actually love the new Obituary record 'Inked in Blood', I've been listening to the new Arch Enemy. Also I've been listening to the old classic's like old Staind and Motley Crue but as far as new stuff I've been going really heavy.
