The Specials - Vote for Me

December 5th 2018
(CD Single Review)

Something Speical worth voting for

The Specials have returned, while they may have had a few spin offs such as Special AKA and Fun boy Three since this is the first single to be labelled as the original since ‘Ghost Town’ back in 1981. It involves Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter of the original line up. So a core of the original song writers are still there keeping it as true to the original as possible, famed for always having something to say about current affairs ‘Vote for Me’ continues that theme.

As you may have gathered from the title is about corruption in politics and how really we do not have any choice for a decent option on the ballot paper. Musically it also follows on from where they left off and has a nod to many of their previous hits scattered especially ‘Ghost Town’ throughout, it certainly works both on keeping true to the sound while also sounding relevant today which is not always an easy mix to achieve successfully.

Older fans will be wondering where the thirty years of missing Special music has gone but I think it can attract a new audience too and appealing across the divide. This has been shown on their reunion shows for the last decade too with old and young admiring the timeless songs, well now there is new material to add to all of those classics. Maybe they did ‘Too much too Young’ but ‘Vote for Me’ proves they can still get you to ‘Enjoy Yourself’ while listening to a great tune.
