Spiritualized - Take you on a trip!

July 19th 2013
Oxford, Truck Festival, UK

***1/2

Experimental and Avant Garde and weird!

Spiritualized ***1/2 (Truck Stage) have a giant projection screen behind them that shows brilliant and strange images. This is good because singer Jason Pierce just sits on a stole on the left hand side of the stage not moving at all which is a bit boring to watch. Apparently he has done this for quite a few shows only standing at the front when he wants to, this doesn't leave much for the paying public to watch.

Tracks 'Electricity' and 'Hey Jane' are awesome sounding tonight but the performance was not really working for me with only the video screens to watch rather than watching the band. Standing up watching this band is not what you need to do and when I decide to sit back and relax and watch the whole show comes into my head and I see how this band needs to work for me personally. So as I sit on the grass and chill watching Spiritualized. I see the music really seems to work. Like all the times I sat chilled in my room listening to to them really enjoying them, they are a band that are all about mood and you need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy them.

The highlight of their set is a brilliant long version of 'Come Together' which is simply brilliant and goes on forever. It also has great soul groove sound backing vocals that have a Gospel edge and really put new life into the song. This song might be a little repetitive but it has real emotion to it like all songs by Spiritualized and I really love hearing it live. This is a brilliant anthem that stayed with me since it was first released all those years ago, when I first popped it out of the pill shaped medical packaging it came in off the album 'Ladies and Gentlemen... We are floating in Space'.

The thing is about the bands set when it finally finished you just want more and I find myself sitting on the grass waiting for them to play more. Like their brilliant anthem 'Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in Space' of the album of the same name which they sadly don't play today. They leave you with a nice feel so they must have done something right and I would love to check them out again.
