Tax the Heat - Change your Position
***
Catchy Blues Rock with a chart friendly tone!!!
Tax the Heat are a Blues Rock band from Bristol in England, that have a driving ambition to succeed. 'Use your Position' is the bands second studio album, and the follow up to their debut album 'Fed to the Lions' and the bands debut self titled EP. The band have gone on a long way from their, with support slots to well known bands and a load of good reviews for their live performances. The album opens with the single 'Money in the Bank', which is Garage Rock with a hint of Stoner to a steady beat.
The lyrics are simplistic but this is the brilliance of this track, it is not over done. Probably the nicest moment is the bridge in the track because it has smooth vocals that sink in... to a big Rock chorus and well crafted guitar solo. The title track and anthem 'Change your Position' is more interesting, it has a catchy melody to it, you can imagine walking down the street... strutting to this one. This is a radio friendly Rock / Grunge song with a nice little bit of attitude to it, this is a very memorable track.
Tax the Heat are really a band 'Playing with Fire', and their destination is the big stage. With songs like 'All that Medicine', I think they might make it. This is a very funky track and possibly my favourite on the album. I like the fact it is very different to the others, which at time sound like they could be done by a number of bands including RavenEye or any band Myles Kennedy is in. This song really sounds like Tax the Heat being themselves, and if they could bottle this... they would have the recipe for success.
I think they have put their best tracks at the start of the album, which is quite smart... because with most albums how many people actually get to the end on their first couple of listens. I have to say I struggled with this album in places and after the first half I found myself drifting off a little, even though I can hear nothing wrong with the band in general. 'Cut your Chains' is nice and has a little bit of a Queens of the Stone Age meets The Beatles vibe to it. But I feel they could have put a little bit more into it, the tempo is the best part of the song. And the little Acapella segment, that lasts only a few seconds. Maybe if 'We are Consumers', we might have just consumed something too similar recently to be taking full attention to all the tracks.
Tax the Heat are very consistent and if you want an album full of radio friendly Blues / Rock songs, this is a band that you can't go wrong with. But I would like to see a little more from them in the future, maybe mix it up a bit. But I know they are a band with determination, I have been sent so many press releases for them, and they have done quite a few music videos... and a band with this passion will always get there in the end. So I don't think you will see Tax the Heat disappearing anytime soon. Maybe at the moment it's not for me, but I think their is a place for Tax the Heat in the current Rock scene.
