Blood, Sweat and Valentines Cards

Towers of London ***** It's been a while since we have heard that much from the Towers of London, so it's strange that I find myself at the New Cross Inn on Valentines Day of all days. But I have been really looking forward to it all week, been humming the songs around the office... driving everyone absolutely nuts. The last time we really heard of singer Donny Tourette was with all that Big Brother stuff, which kind of put a cloud over ... what great music they make.

The public can do this sometimes, get fixated on one thing and forget about others, the things that are more important like the music.Towers of London where always a fun band, with a crazy live show. But they are not only that, they have some great songs. And I think their commercial disappointing 2008 second album 'Fizzy Pop', kind of drew peoples attention away from the band. Which is a real shame, they really have something to say and I think their third album will say it. 'Fizzy Pop' had some good songs on it, but I think it was too much of a change from the first and the fans just did not take to it.

They actually play no songs from this album tonight, preferring to play songs from 2006's 'Blood, Sweat and Towers'. I really can't believe that this album is almost twelve years old, It really seems like it was released yesterday. They top up the set with loads of new material which I have been waiting to hear.I always thought losing the Rev was a blow to their arsenal, but now they have comeback with an even
better guitarist in the form of Stevie Sunset who's on stage guitar playing is just mesmerising.

Because of the weather and the fact it is Valentines Day, the venue is not that fall. When Donny comes to the stage in a big fake fur coat he jokes "Welcome to the singles Club" as they break into a song that
should have been a huge hit over the last few weeks 'Superbowl'. If you have not seen the video, I strongly advise it... it's really funny and brilliant. It's great to see him with his brother Dirk and the chemistry on stage is a good as it ever has been before. Watch the Video for 'Superbowl' Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlhpvBW-tEM

I think there might have been some nerves in the air because 'Superbowl' tonight doesn't sound as big as it should have, but this is just a short interval. Because as they break into live favourite 'On a Noose'
you realise Towers of London are really back. They continue with 'Send in the Roses' a new song, which everyone already seems to know... or is it just that it is so catchy they think they know it.
But tonight if we are talking about new songs there are two that lead the pack the amazing 'Amazing' and my personal favourite 'Shot in the Dark' which you just have to hear the guitar solo on... it is just simply breathtaking.

This band have so many great song and a great attitude, as they joke with members of the crowd and make sure that everyone is involved in the evening. From jumping around to big hit 'Air Guitar', to their drummer Rocco wearing a mini mouse Christmas type jumper... to them playing 'Beaujolais' for a fan and them dedicating 'I'm a Rat' as the theme of this Valentines night. They end the set as they always did with a sing-a-long to 'F**k it Up', which really takes me back.

With the band climbing on tables or whatever is near, I think everyone who came out to New Cross tonight realised we need more Towers of London in our lives... and that band! are quite simply stronger than ever. A great evening and the way I wanted to spend my Valentines Day with my girlfriend, who quite simply loved it. Maybe all the singles in the room tonight, will get a girlfriend and take them to the next Towers of London show.
