Toy - Show New York City what they are made of!
****
The Toy is out the box and ready to be played with!
Toy are tonight in Brooklyn, in an area far from the lights of Times Square and all the skyscrapers. They are playing a small venue called Baby’s all Right as very special guests and I think a lot of people have been waiting a long time to see them. The Williamsburg scene reminds me of Shoreditch or Dalston in London and this doesn’t make me feel far from the UK Indie Brit-Rock scenario. Along with The Horrors, Toy have taken the Art-Rock scene by storm gathering a massive fan base in the UK so it was really nice to see how they came across in a different part of the World.
And after having played at Rough Trade East for the Record Store Day and at the London, Shepherd’s Bush o2 Empire recently. Toy have taken a break from the UK and started their second US tour, this time hitting the un chanted territory of the East Coast. After releasing their second album 'Join the Dots', Toy mainly concentrated on European dates, but the London based band felt the importance of sharing their music in America too where they are starting to have a strong audience.
The band hits the stage at 10:30pm opening with the song 'Conductor', a very strong heavy intro taken from their latest album that marks their style and I can see from the very beginning that people at the Baby’s all Right will really enjoy this gig. Even though the venue is not really good (honestly the sound was awful!) the band put the right effort to bring the right atmosphere and to share their music even to first time listener. Songs like 'Colours running Out, Too far gone to Know' and 'Dead and Gone' are the perfect manifesto for Toy’s Psychedelic Rock background and I can clearly see what the band is bringing on stage when playing songs like 'Kopter, You won’t be the Same' and the most famous single 'My heart skips a Beat' this is not just another Indie Rock band!
Even though there’s no interaction at all with the audience, the band’s presence on stage is remarkable and Tom Dougall’s voices, along with other band member’s music skills are out of the question. All in all a good gig almost one hour and fourty five minutes of pure energy, maybe not the right venue to watch this band for the first time and to fully appreciate their music. But I have to say this is definitely a good start for Toy who are the band of the moment and one of the best live act around in the UK. So I think America will be keeping an eye on Toy in the future because they don't disappoint live or on record.
