Thrashing their way through their set!

Graspop Metal Meeting

Trivium **** (Main Stage 2) are an American Metal / Thrash Metal band from Orlando, Florida who have been on the scene for quite a few years now. I think they have always been over looked as a band that could be huge, and in the last few years fallen down the line-up's a little and now they are always in mid position on the bills. People forgetting about when they played impressive headline sets on the second stage of such festivals as Download. Today they hit the main stage two of the Graspop Metal Meeting and they are out to show what they can really do.

They have creeped up the bill a little since the release of their brilliant album 'Vengeance Falls' and they are just below Rob Zombie today... so if they didn't shine now they would possibly fall back down the line-up for the next time they are booked. 'Divinity I' intro kicks in and then it time for 'Brave this Storm' this track is a in the face storm of guitars and drum sounds added with some extremely great vocals by Singer / Guitarist Matt Heafy. This song is a good example of how good new album 'Vengeance Falls' even if it has missed a lot of original fans earbuds.

I think because tracks like 'Brave this Storm' sound like a progression of the bands early material has really made 'Vengeance Falls' a album that is well worth a listen and to be honest one that you can't afford not to have in your racks. I do think the band need more commercial sounding tracks like this if they want to move up to the next level.'Built to Fall' off the 'In Waves' albums storm by like a catchy Metal monster, that has been on the radio all week, it did get some plays on the video channels but not as many as it should have done. Single 'Strife' was one of the first songs a lot of people heard off the first album and it's a catchy commercial number that would give Bullet for my Valentine or Metallica a run for their money.

It's just a great Metal track that is easy to get into and shows why Trivium move forward from album to album.'Black' also off the 'In Waves' album is similar to 'Built to Fall' and really set the feel of the album that both of these songs come from 'Throes of Perdition' goes down really well and I think this is because of how much it sounds like Metal giants Metallica, but with more intrecut guitar playing and stronger less annoying vocals (Sorry recently James Hetfield sounds like he is trying to put the southern sound on almost every word). It's more commercial than Metallica but also heavier which is strange, but maybe showing how heavy music is breaking on the airwaves.

'Watch the World Burn' has become a live favourite for Trivium and you can see why because it comes across really well and the guitar harmonies work well on the big stage. 'Through blood and dirt and Bone' has been tagged as the next single to be lifted off 'Vengeance Falls' and you can see with the awesome harmonics why it has, also on this track the lyrics almost tell a story. I also think playing so many shows in Europe has given the band a little edge of the European Metal guitar sound to their music.

I think it's really good when bands can adapt to their surroundings and learn things, and Trivium have done just that.  So when they break into 'Anthem (We are the Fire)' which is a killer Thrash tune that almost made the band a household name, your already won over by Trivium and want to jump around singing every work of the catchy number. 'Dying in your Arms' off the bands breakthrough album 'Ascendancy' is most definitely a mainstream Metal track that people like to sing and comes across really well in the live surroundings while 'Down from the Sky' off the underrated 'Shogun' album.

This song has a real elegance to it and has an intro the has hints of Iron Maiden and Metallica to it, if you mixed it with the sound of early Trivium singles. This album was really over looked and I think took off really well from where 'Crusade' left off and could actually be the bands best album to date and the one that is most interesting technically. 'Capsizing the Sea' is a short interlude track starts off with a slow military drummer boy vibe, like it's building up to the big explosion. you know how Trent Reznor likes to build up tracks with his band Nine inch Nails and then drives it in to a track like the one Trivium ends their set with 'In Waves' which is one of my favourite of their songs off the album of the same name.

This a song that has a killer beat to it and real drive that makes it hit you hard and fast. You can hear everyone screaming the title words out, as the band blast through this heavy song with the determination to close everything with a bang and make an impact. 'In Waves' now one of the bands biggest tracks, works so well because of the melody that is put together for the chorus.

Trivium have upped their game a little since the last time I saw them live, which is a really good thing. With Trivium they are not always good live, but when they have a good day they are like nothing else. I would love Trivium to progress to the next level but I am not sure they ever will, and that is a real shame because they could be the next Metallica or Megadeth.
