Venus Grrrls - Hex
****2/3
Venus Grrrls are going to put a spell on you.
When a band choose to release a song on Halloween, it gives you some idea of the sort of thing to expect. I certainly didn’t think this was going to be a collection of CBeebies classics. Venus Grrrls are said band with their new single ‘Hex’. A clever play on the spooky season, with the spooky bit being how some men unfortunately still harass women and this song is about beating that.
The video definitely has very Halloween vibes with Craft like spells being shown to be summoned while they escape from the demon. In fact t looks very much like it may have been filmed in an escape room, repurposed as the demonic lair for the event. The song itself is punchy guitar driven Rock tune full of Riot Girl sounds, with vocals that are enticing yet slightly menacing too, which fits the track perfectly.
Venus Grrrls seems to be building a following and it is easy to see why with such strong songs and having been rightly championed on Radio 1 and Radio 6. With tunes such as ‘Hex’ that support is only going to grow. I admit this band were new to me with this song, but I’ll certainly be looking out for more of their stuff in the future, I suggest you do the same. This is for fans of Hole, L7, Kaito, Kenicke and Sleater Kinney and even Elastica and Sleeper.
