Wildwood Kin by Wildwood Kin so good they named it twice

Wildwood Kin are a three piece Folk band from Devon, they released their debut album back in 2017 which thrust them onto the stage. Since that point they have played a lot of stages as it happens including some quite prestigious ones from Glastonbury to Hyde Park and a quick stop at the Royal Albert Hall too not bad for this family trio. Now they are releasing their follow up album the self-titled ‘Wildwood Kin’, well of course it is called that as it is self-titled.

Opening with upbeat ‘Heading for The Water’ the strengths of this band and how they have had such a meteoric rise is clear, with wonderful musicianship on shown in a well-crafted song. It is probably their harmonies that really make them stand out though; maybe it is the family ties but their voices work together seamlessly.

Whilst being incredibly accomplished themselves, they did choose to get a bit of outside help on this record too with Gabrelle Aplin co-writing ‘Wake up Sleeper’ and Ed Harcourt on ‘Never Alone’. ‘Never Alone’ is one of the tracks which really stands out on the album having a powerful sound and it was inspired by the tragic suicide of band member Meg Loney’s brother so a fitting tribute with a powerful message.  But in all honesty the whole album is good with all tracks having their own place and offering something different to the whole.

I called them a Folk band, but they take their sound from so many more places than that, it is Folk in the sense it has a very traditional sound but there are Country, Rock and even Pop sounds in there at times too. Overall a very well crafted album that should appeal to a wide audience and equally should continue to help them grace even more stages in the future. The album is amazing but their sound really comes out live, so I strongly suggest you buy this album and then get along and see them play it live, you won’t be disappointed with either.
