Uli Jon Roth - Plays two times at the centre, here's what happened on the Prog Stage!
***
Magical mastermind is just average in Rotherham!
Uli Jon Roth *** is one of the most respected guitarists in Rock and Prog and today he explore the wonderful World of the Magna centre in Rotherham. The guitarist that spent some of his best years with The Scorpions and UFO embarked on a HRH voyage with playing on both the Prog and AOR festival stages on the same day.
The old timer has a young band behind him, but does not need it because his guitar skills are still second to none... as he ventures through old classic Scorpions tracks including 'Longing for Fire, Crying Days' and the epic 'The Sails of Charon'. These classics songs sound different in the hands of Roth sounding more Prog than Rock and I am not sure I like this, but you can't blame him for trying something new. This young band consists of musicians that can really play and vocals that have a little soul in them by the bass player, which makes you know he still knows what he is doing when putting together a band.
The highlight of the set is his version of the Bob Dylan song 'All along the Watchtower' which he puts real feeling into, but you do think for a cover to be the highlight it's not saying much for his own material. And when he ends on more covers, this time by the Jimi Hendrix Experience you just think is he know turning into just a very good covers band. The set is not bad and it is nice to chill to but I wouldn't go out my way to watch this again. I do have great respect though for a living legend who is still churning it out live.
