Introducing Cecil

Storytelling songstress Cecil has just released her new track 'Black Maria', It came out on June 8th and you can read a review of it on this site. Cecil takes a methodical and timeless approach to her music to create something truly unique.

Born and raised in Berkshire, Cecil takes her name along with a heavy amount of inspiration from pioneering broadcasting producer Cecil McGivern, her great uncle who’s responsible for the screenplay for the original 1946 version of Charles Dickens famous novel 'Great Expectations'.

She was mastering her voice as well as piano as a young adolescent, having spent her childhood immersed in music with her mother being a musician. Not long after she was writing songs in her now self described “off Pop” style, which sits musically somewhere between Lana Del Rey and Kate Bush.

Recent release 'Queen of the Cruel' was well received by critics and fans alike, earning plays on BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing Berkshire as well as a nomination for “Best Female Solo Artist” at the prestigious Unsigned Music Awards. Debut EP 'Silly Business' also received a torrent of support from the likes of BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Berkshire, BBC Radio Oxford and many more.

New offering 'Black Maria' is set to impress with it’s moody yet luxurious instrumental, incorporating both timeless and modern musical aesthetics which come together in an almost cinematic fashion. The ethereal and dark downtempo backing provides a perfect space for Cecil’s voice to truly shine with it’s crisp harmony, moody lyrics and a performance that match the well conceived theme.
