A new offering from a rising star
Cecil is a relatively new singer songwriter on the scene but has already gained rave reviews and had coverage from Radio 6 and BBC Introducing. There must be something creative in the blood as apparently her mother was a musician and her grandfather was a filmmaker in the 1940’s so there is certainly an artistic streak for her to follow on from.
‘Black Maria’ is now her third full release following recent track ‘Queen of the Cruel’ and her debut EP ‘Silly Business’. It is a dark Pop song populated by low key Electronic beats and a stripped back low key backing track which allows her voice to mostly take the centre stage of the song. Well I am not sure it should be totally pigeon holed into Pop as it has a bit of an Alternative edge too.
She is obviolsy a very talented singer and lyrcist and I liked the general feel of the track, but for me I was always waiting for it to go to the next step and it sort of drifted along until the end a bit. While I appreciate a good artist has a range of songs I preffered her previous offering 'Queen of the Cruel' with a bit more zip about it. I almost feel bad saying it but something didn't quite grab me on this one.
She is spending the summer touring the festivals and I, with it's laid back feel, I can certainly see this song and her style working on a laid back sunny Sunday afternoon, preferably with a glass of something in hand. With this being only her third release I am sure there is much more to come as the sound develops and is taken in other interesting directions.
