Kiefer Sutherland - Grey

Hollywood stars shines once again

Kiefer Sutherland is a Canadian-born actor and musician, probably more widely known for his work in film and television, particularly his award winning role as Jack Bauer in 24. He had the performing genes from the start, being son of actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas. But he has firmly built his own successful career through roles in films such as Stand by Me and The Lost Boys.

While still acting, Keifer has developed a parallel career as a musician, a mix of Country, Folk and Americana influences. His albums reveal a preference for storytelling, emotional directness and road-worn arrangements. While acting he is playing someone else, with his music it feels like the real Kiefer is on show.

He’s now on his fourth studio album, ‘Grey’, the album was written and recorded over a two-year period and presents itself as his most personal musical statement so far. Every album he has made has seen a developmental progression as a musician, and this continues to be the case with this album. Feeling a long way from the rawness of the ‘Down in a Hole’ debut.

The songs have quite a traditional Americana/ country feel, especially such as ‘Simpler Time’ and ‘Goodbye California’ being upbeat and are very good both lyrically and musically. With others like ‘American Farmer’ and ‘Cruel World’ being more downbeat and focusing on storytelling and exploring hardship, all come across with sincerity. Final track ‘Rage in Me’, he almost has a bit of both.

Overall Grey is a warm, sincere and confidently performed Americana album. It shows Kiefer Sutherland growing as a songwriter and settling into a voice that feels increasingly his own. It feels like he will be recognised more and more as a musician and not just an actor, but is blessed by being very good at both of them.
