Toy - Turn the lights off and just play!
****
Toy will influence the next generation of new bands!
Toy **** are a band from Brighton that you have to understand before you see or get them. Yes they don't have a commercial shower of songs that get you straight away, but a lot hit you under the radar and you find yourself humming them. Headliners Placebo are far more mainstream than Toy but you can see that they come from back ground and are influenced by many of the same bands.
You can see why Brian Molko would like this band and I think this is why they are on the bill tonight. The band have a lot going for them and mix up Psychedelic Rock with Grunge, coming out of the love of bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Horrors, The Birthday Party and many others.
Their sound is so polished even if it distorted and uses well these 70's Psychedelic and 80's Goth to 90's Indie and Grunge really well to make a great wall of sound, where personalities are not needed. You can be sturne faced and cool at the same time while churning out some of the best music you have ever heard.
Yes their set is a little self indulgent but that's what you want from this band and when the lights are turned down low like in the set today, the music is really the only thing to do the talking. At times in the set you can't see much with the band being only silhouettes and nothing more, this is a band that looks really cool so their is no need to do this.
I really love Toy their one of my new favourite bands from the last couple of years and was a little miffed that I really couldn't see them for most of their performance, If I had paid thirty pounds just to see them. I would feel a little cheated because if you pay to see a band you actually want to see them and not just an outline.
I have all the records and CD's so if I don't want to see anything, I can sit at home if I can't see anything and listen to them it won't be much different. When you see a band live you actually want to see the band members expressions because this is what makes a live show brilliant. Giving all this their performance that I can see if first rate and one that is really worth watching.
