Fleshgod Apocalypse - It really is time for the Apocalypse of the Underworld!
****
The Italian dark rising stars open a stunning line up.
Fleshgod Apocalypse **** come from Rome, Italy and seem to be one of the bands that Nuclear Blast Records are really showcasing at the moment, with their new album 'Labyrinth' being a massive hit. And for all you that were disappointed because they didn't get it in the Christmas stockings might have been lucky to catch them tonight supporting Kataklysm. For me Christmas soon came and went and their is better way to get over my Christmas Blues, weight gain, terrible weather and all round gloom January brings with it then to branch out into dirty, rainy Camden and watch a few bands make a racket and bang your head.
Well this heavy music really cheered me up! Tonight we have a mixed line up with all three bands tonight bringing something different to the table. Up first are the rising stars Fleshgod Apocalypse. They cram onto the stage with six members, they are all in ripped dusty suits and give off an aura that you've come to a haunted house demented ball rather then the Gothic corpse thing so many bands who use theatrics tend to adopt nowadays. Starting off with the haunting sound of their 'Temptation' intro that sounds like it is taken from some Horror movie like 'House of Wax' at the begin and some of the band even look a little like Simon Dark.
The dark tones of the piano / keyboards kick in with plonks and then the Symphonic Opera backing vocals and screaming classic Death Metal vocals that hit at you hard and fast like singer Cristiano Trionfera is speaking in tongues. 'Minotaur (The Wrath of Poseidon)' is a very complexed piece of work that can not be ignored.
This song then get's messy and goes all over the place like a Prog Rock explosion of Technical Death Metal. They continue on with the fast sounds off the album 'Agony' of 'The Oppression, The Violation' and 'The Egoism' that fire out at you like like they have been let off out of a cannon and show why the 2011 album was such a big hit.
I got to be honest, I didn't quite get off on the right foot with this band and the boat kind of left without me. I listened to their latest album 'Labyrinth' whilst preparing for tonight and still wasn't quite sure what to make of them. It is different seeing a band in a live setting and in the London, Camden Underworld everything really fell in to place and finally made sense to me and 'Elegy' off this album is just a masterpiece.
The band brilliant mix of Technical Death Metal mixed with symphonies and a female soprano in tow. Granted many a band have done a lot of what they do before but Fleshgod Apocalypse seem to nail their own sound and keep things unique to themselves.
The band are super tight, the musicianship is phenomenal and the image is great. I think Fleshgod Apocalypse really deliver the full package and are well worth watching and when they end with 'The Forsaking' you know that no one could deny this.
The bands profile seems to be rising every week and with their latest album 'Labyrinth' making many 2013 top ten lists with time people here tonight are going to be boasting "I saw them as a support band in the Underworld years ago!"
